Allison Ridgeway, Global Studies, Peer Adviser

"My name is Allison Ridgeway. I am from Kirksville, Missouri and I am a junior, fitness and wellness promotion major. My favorite thing in the entire world is to travel (and maybe eat watermelon). I am so intrigued by different cultures and how they relate to my own. The best way to truly understand and appreciate a culture is to immerse yourself in it, which is why I love the BU global studies program. The trips through the global studies program are not only fun, but they are affordable and serve a greater purpose than just getting to pet llamas in Peru (which was actually one of my favorite parts). Knowing that I get to help local communities through service work done in another country is such a rewarding feeling, and the memories made are priceless.

Out of all of the countries I have been to, the most memorable trip has been to Peru. I was fortunate enough to celebrate my birthday there and even had a party thrown in my honor by some of the Peruvians we were working with. They not only baked me a cake, but also hired a live band, served some of the best sushi I have ever had, and gave me a traditional Peruvian hat. It is definitely going to be hard to top that trip in the future, but, through BU Global Studies, it is possible. If you have questions about how to start planning your own experience in cultural immersion through the BU global service learning program, please, feel free to contact me!"
