Entertainer Gary Morris Holds MasterClass for Bethel Renaissance Students
Close to 150 of Bethel’s Renaissance performing arts students gathered to hear entertainer Gary Morris conduct a MasterClass at the school’s McKenzie campus on Friday, Sept. 23.
Morris, a country music and Broadway star, shared his story of how a college football player ended up landing the lead in the hit Broadway musical, “Les Miserables.”
Morris shared how a summer working in Colorado with his college buddies led to his playing country music in a club that eventually led to his signing with a record company and having a notable country music career. Morris went on to tell about his experiences working in television, in the opera production “La Boheme” and on Broadway in “Les Miserables.”
“I actually didn’t have any formal musical training, unless you count a high school chorus class” Morris said. “But if I was presented an opportunity, I made sure to go for it full force.”
Students were given the opportunity to ask Morris questions with many asking advice on how to break into music, television and theatre.
“Get accustomed to hearing the word, no,” Morris said. “Because for every yes you get you’ll have heard many more no’s.”
Morris also performed acoustical versions of some of his well-known classics including “Wind Beneath My Wings,” for which he had earned CMA and ACM Song of the Year awards.
The MasterClass ended with a rehearsal for Morris’ Jackson, Tenn., Christmas show. Morris had asked Renaissance students to join him on stage during his concert to perform one of his songs. The show, called My Country, My Christmas, is scheduled for two 7:30 p.m., performances at The Ned on Wednesday, Nov. 30, and on Thursday, Dec. 1. Tickets are now available and can be purchased at The Potter’s Garden (731-660-9990), Jenny Craig (731-668-4313) and The Ned (731-425-8397). www.garymorris.com Facebook Gary Morris Musician/Band
