Renaissance Theatre to Present Once on This Island

Bethel’s Renaissance Theatre will present “Once on This Island,” a musical tale of the power of love, beginning this Friday, Nov. 1 at 7 p.m. at the Bethel Performing Arts Center on Stonewall St., in McKenzie. Other show times will include Sat., Nov. 2 at 7 p.m., Nov. 7, 8, and 9 at 7 p.m., and Sunday, Nov. 10 at 2 p.m.

“Once on This Island” is a one-act musical with a book and lyrics by Lynn Ahrens and music by Stephen Flaherty. Based on the 1985 novel “My Love, My Love;” or “The Peasant Girl” by Rosa Guy, the setting is in the French Antilles in the Caribbean Sea. The show also includes elements of the “Romeo and Juliet” story as well as the fairytale of “The Little Mermaid.” The story concerns a peasant girl on a tropical island who uses the power of love to bring together people of different social classes.

The original Broadway production ran from 1990 to 1991, and the West End production opened in 1994, where it won the 1995 Olivier Award for Best New Musical.
