Hendrix Competition is Feb. 21-22
Bethel’s College of Arts and Sciences will host the 2014 Hendrix Scholarship Competition on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 21-22 on the school’s McKenzie campus.
The Hendrix Scholarship is Bethel’s most prestigious scholarship with the winner of the competition earning full tuition, room and board. The scholarship was established by Willard Hendrix, a successful Nashville civic leader and businessman who had a great desire to bring qualified and dedicated faculty into contact with outstanding and deserving students. The establishment of the Hendrix Trust and the Hendrix Scholarship Competition are the fulfillment of one of Mr. Hendrix’s dreams. As the grandson of Bethel University President W.W. Hendrix, the younger Hendrix wanted to pay tribute to his grandfather, who had earned the reputation of outstanding educator. It was President Hendrix who reopened Bethel University on a new McKenzie, Tennessee campus after the Civil War. Willard Hendrix established the trust just two months before his death in August 1988. Since that time, students have been competing for the prestigious award.
During the competition, students are tested in academic ability during a two-day event.
To be eligible to compete, a student must be a high school senior with at least a 3.25 GPA and a 23/1050 (combination of Critical Reading and Math only) or above ACT/SAT score. The winner and runner up of the competition must maintain a 3.6 GPA to renew the scholarship each year.
To apply for the 2014 Hendrix Competition, students must apply for admission, apply for the competition, submit an official 7th semester transcript and submit official ACT or SAT scores. Letters of recommendation may be requested as well. The deadline for the 2014 competition is Friday, Feb. 14. Transcripts, test scores and recommendations will also be due on this date.
