Bethel University’s Global Studies program has given me the opportunity to be an active global citizen, while expanding my horizons through serving and studying abroad.  At seventeen years old I was given a chance to serve abroad on a mission trip, here my love for international service began.  Upon my arrival to Bethel University, the global studies program was something I immediately sought out.  My freshman year when I traveled to Peru during spring break, I did not know that this trip would be the start on my journey with Global Studies at Bethel University.  During the 2017-2018 school year, I was blessed with the opportunity to serve this program as a Student Ambassador, which I get to do again this academic year as well.  Along with Peru, I have traveled to serve in Costa Rica twice.  One gains not only knowledge about a new part of the world when they take a trip, but one learns new things about themselves as well.  Traveling abroad is near and dear to my heart as God has given me a passion for the people all over the world that He has so beautifully designed.  I love serving and helping this program expand as it gives students an opportunity to grow spiritually, physically, socially, and intellectually.

Natalie Marvel

Hello, my name is Natalie Marvel and I am ecstatic to be an ambassador for this amazing program through Bethel University! I am currently a senior, and will soon be graduating with a bachelor’s degree in psychology in the spring semester of 2019. Having traveled with the Global Studies program twice now, to Cuba and Colombia, it is safe to say that serving as a student ambassador will be a great way to finish out my time here at BU.

For many reasons, Global Studies has been such a great gift to me. While this program allows you to get away from school for a few days, which we all look forward to every now and then, make no mistake … it is a great learning opportunity!  Through our programs, students are able to experience diverse cultures and ethnicities by participating in community-led service projects.  We gain knowledge about the history of our host countries through coursework, tours, and personal interactions with local people.  We are introduced to new foods and ways of living, which improves our intercultural competency, and most importantly, we are able to create personal relationships with the people we meet, making connections that will last a lifetime. Recognizing and respecting other people's way of life has also been an important part of this program for me.   So, although having fun on these adventures is guaranteed, our goal is to help you grow physically, intellectually, socially, and spiritually.

The BU Global Studies Program will allow you to take a step out of your comfort zone and into all the beauty these programs are designed to entail. Travelling to a foreign country may be a tad overwhelming for some, but I can assure you that our programs are well thought out, beautifully planned, and are always delivered in a way that ensures everyone has a memorable time!

If you have any questions about BU Global Studies or are interested in any of the future missions, feel free to e-mail me anytime and God bless!

Kelsey Hayes

My name is Kelsey Hayes and I am a junior here at Bethel majoring in Sociology and minoring in Human Services. I grew up in a Christian family and have always been passionate about mission work. You always hear all of these stories of people feeling called to GO and how just one trip changed their life. It was not until my junior year of high school that I felt a tug in my heart to travel to Colombia, South America. This first trip ignited a fire in me that I had never felt before. It was there that I fell in love with traveling and serving others. I learned about the Global Studies Program my senior year of high school and immediately knew that this was something that I wanted to be a part of. During my freshman year at Bethel, I had an opportunity to return to Colombia, but this time with the GS program. I thought I knew what to expect and I thought I would have the same experiences as before, but boy was I wrong! I am still in awe of the many wonders that were laid out and unfolded in front of me. You can study a country and read as many history books as you want; but you will never truly understand a culture or its people until you go and live among them. This program has given me endless opportunities to spread love, make memories, build connections and relationships, and an opportunity to grow in many different ways. It is a blessing to be part of something that is bigger than me. Contact me if there is anything I can do to help you join this amazing program! I absolutely cannot wait to see what journey awaits YOU.

Kayley Grisham

Hey, y'all! I’m Kayley. Here’s a little background about me: When I graduated high school in 2011, I was uncertain if college was the right choice for me. Through many ups and downs in between, I decided to work instead. I’ve been working at a local hospital since 2015, where I'm reminded each day of how passionately I feel about serving others. I made the decision to attend Bethel University during the fall of 2017, with a major in nursing. It was then that somehow, after all of my indecisiveness and years of waiting, I felt a peace that I was where I was supposed to be. Nearing the end of the drop-add period, I switched out a couple of my classes and ended up in Stacie Freeman’s sociology class. As you may know, it doesn’t take long after meeting her to hear about the Global Studies department. As a small town girl with big dreams, I immediately became interested in the program!

Although I can’t imagine living anywhere with more than 3 traffic lights, I also can’t imagine a life without learning more about other cultures. I truly believe that God led me to a place where He knew that I could see my heart’s desires fulfilled. I cannot wait to see what the future holds for Bethel University Global Studies and for each of our lives! Please reach out to me if there is anything that I can do to help you share in this global learning experience!

Amber Putt

Hi, I’m Amber! I’ve been blessed with the opportunity to be an ambassador for Global Studies this year. I am currently a Senior here at Bethel University. I will be graduating with a bachelor’s degree in Psychology with a minor in Sociology in 2019. I’m very active in various activities, but working and traveling with Bethel University Global Studies has by far been my favorite experience throughout my time at BU. I have traveled to both Colombia and Costa Rica many times and I can’t wait to go back!

The reason I chose to be so active with this program is because it embodies everything that I want out of life. This program has given me a chance to grow mentally, spiritually, intellectually, and physically. I have made so many friendships along the way. I have grown closer to God than ever before. I have cleaned up oceans in Costa Rica, played music with the students of Colegio Americano, and learned the history of Cartagena while actually standing in the middle of it!!!  In a time where technology is a primary form of communication and learning, Global Studies breaks through that barrier and lets you travel to these places, meet the people, and make a difference in various parts of the world... IN PERSON! Being a part of Global Studies at Bethel University has provided me with the knowledge and opportunities to better understand others around the world and their needs. Colombia and Costa Rica have shown me love, patience, respect, culture, friendships, history, and acceptance. I feel like I am more ready for life after BU because of the opportunities this program has provided me.

If you are ever interested in traveling with us, please feel free to contact any of us. Not only do we want to change the lives of others, but we would love to see this program change your life as well!
